Sylvia Stagg-Giuliano: A walk in the past: Pigment prints of statues, fountains, monuments and memorials in the parks of Guataquil, Ecuador.

“Since emigrating to the U.S.A in 1976, I have returned to my birthplace of Guayaquil, Ecuador at least once a year. As I walk the streets of my native city, I vividly recall events, sensations, emotions and people from my youth. In a sense, I find myself walking not in a physical space but in my own past.

On recent trips, I have spent more and more time in the many small parks and plazas scattered throughout the city. Very often, even the most modest of these public spaces boasts a monument, statue, or ornamental fountain. Whether their purpose is to commemorate a momentous event, honor a fallen hero, or simply to refresh the eye, they foster a sense of community, continuity, and history.

Many of these public works of art are very old. They have been familiar sights to me since childhood, as they were for my parents, and their parents before them. Walking among them, I feel an emotional connection both with my own personal history, and with that of my fellow Guayaquilenos. Through these images, I invite you to accompany me in this walk in the past.“

Location: 35 Channel Center, 35 Channel Center Street, Fort Point, Boston, MA. Presented by the Fort Point Arts Community Inc. Openning teception: January 7th, 5–7pm. Through March 2009.

Barbara Peacock: Faces Documentary

“My interest has always been in daily life and rituals so I turned my camera on my hometown in 1982 and have continued ever since. Among the white churches and maple lined streets are born the traditions unique to American culture; the bake sales, spaghetti supers, communal fundraising, holiday bazaars, parades, pep rallies, as well as universal rites of passage. What I found in my small country town was a microcosm of American traditions, culture and folklore that invite both memory and metaphor.“

The long anticipated book SPEEDLIGHTS & SPEEDLITES: Creative Flash Photography at Lightspeed by Lou Jones is finally here!

Nikon's SPEEDLIGHTS & Canon's SPEEDLITES are modern miracles but most professional & advanced amateurs are still using their flashes as they have for decades. The computers packed into today's speedlights have made lighting so much different than in the past.

This book seeks to inform all photographers, first, about the use of one simple camera mounted flash and all the new things it allows you to do. It will demonstrate the paradigm changes in exposure, metering and decision making with one light. Secondly the book will explore the abilities to incorporate multiple strobes without wires or external devices, and will show you how everything works automatically, perfectly and easily for every exposure.

The manufacturers of these devices have been reluctant to inform the photography world about the power contained in these speedlights so this book fills in all the details and makes the transition easy.
